A Century of Enterprise, Built with a Long-Term View
Businesses evolve through the decisions they make over time. For United Group, evolution has always been shaped by a balance between enterprise, continuity and a long-term view.
Since its establishment in 1926 by Carmelo Gatt Baldacchino, the business has continued to adapt to changing markets while remaining grounded in the values that shaped its earliest foundations. What began as a passenger transport business, operating one of Malta’s early motor-driven bus services, would gradually develop into a diversified family-owned Group with interests across mobility, automotive, property development and investment.
From Transport to Tourism
The early years were defined by transport, customer service and the ability to respond to emerging needs. As Malta continued to change, the business changed with it.
Under the leadership of Charles Gatt Baldacchino, the company expanded beyond its transport roots and became closely connected to the early development of Malta’s tourism industry. Through relationships with leading UK tour operators, the business developed activity across chauffeur-driven transport, destination management, tourism transport and mobility services.
The acquisition of the Hertz Rent-A-Car franchise in Malta in 1961 marked another important step in this development. It established a long-standing presence in vehicle rental and reflected the Group’s wider approach to partnerships, service and continuity.
A Broader Business Portfolio
Over time, United Group continued to diversify. Its activities expanded into automotive importation and dealership operations, while vehicle rental and leasing became an established part of its mobility portfolio. Property development and investment also became a central area of activity, supported by a long-term investment approach and a focus on strategic locations.
One of the clearest examples of this direction was the Group’s leadership role in the consortium behind PenderGardens, one of Malta’s landmark mixed-use developments in St. Julian’s. The project reflected the Group’s ability to participate in large-scale developments while maintaining a measured and long-term approach to value creation.
Today, United Group brings together a diversified portfolio across automotive, vehicle rental and leasing, commercial real estate and residential property development in Malta and Vienna.
A Long-Term Approach
Across these areas, the Group continues to operate with a long-term perspective. Its development has been supported by family ownership, long-standing business relationships, investment in people, careful decision-making and a commitment to building value over time.
Real estate has become an important part of the Group’s future direction, including commercial property investment, residential development, property management and activity in Austria. At the same time, the Group continues to strengthen its established automotive, mobility and leasing businesses, recognising the importance of adapting to changing customer expectations and sector developments.
Building the Next Chapter
Looking ahead, United Group’s focus remains on growth that is considered, responsible and aligned with its existing strengths. This includes further developing its property investment portfolio, strengthening its core operations, investing in technology and organisational capability, and continuing to build a business that can adapt across generations.
The Group’s story is not one of change for its own sake. It is a story of continuity through change, where enterprise is balanced with responsibility, and where progress is approached with a long-term view.
As United Group continues to build its next chapter, the principles established in its earliest years remain relevant: identifying opportunities carefully, maintaining trusted relationships, supporting people, and creating lasting value for customers, employees, partners and shareholders.
