Building for the Future: Insights from 100 Years of Experience
Before we talk about the future, it is worth reflecting on what it takes to reach it.
Marking 100 years is a significant milestone for United Group. Yet anniversaries are not simply about longevity. They are an opportunity to reflect on the decisions, values and relationships that have enabled a business to evolve through changing industries, economic cycles and four generations of leadership.
Looking back over the past century, one lesson stands out above all else: businesses endure not because they resist change, but because they remain clear about the principles that guide it.
United Group today is very different from the business founded by Carmelo Gatt Baldacchino in 1926. What began as a transport business evolved into vehicle rental, destination management, automotive importation and distribution, retail, property development and investment. Each stage of that journey required the ability to recognise opportunity, respond to changing market conditions and diversify with purpose. This willingness to evolve has enabled the Group to remain resilient while reducing risk and building long-term value.
The journey, however, has never been without challenges. A century in business inevitably includes periods of uncertainty, changing economic conditions and moments that demand difficult decisions. Navigating these has required resilience, perseverance and sound judgement, but perhaps most importantly, the unity to move forward together. Progress has not been defined by avoiding challenges, but by responding to them with discipline, adaptability and a long-term perspective.
While the businesses have changed, the values have remained remarkably consistent.
Integrity, respect and accountability have guided the Group throughout its history. They influence how decisions are made, how opportunities are assessed and how relationships are built. These are not simply corporate values; they are principles that have shaped the organisation across generations and continue to define how it operates today.
Leadership within a family business carries a unique responsibility. Each new generation steps into a role shaped by history, expectations and the responsibility to guide the organisation forward. Stewardship has therefore never been about preserving the past for its own sake, but about ensuring the organisation remains relevant, resilient and well positioned for those who will lead it in the future. Each generation has built upon the foundations laid by the one before, while introducing new ideas, entering new sectors and adapting to a changing world without losing sight of the principles that define the Group.
Strong governance has been fundamental to that journey. As the organisation has grown in scale and complexity, governance has provided the discipline to make balanced decisions, manage risk responsibly and maintain accountability to employees, partners, customers and stakeholders. It ensures that growth is carefully considered and never comes at the expense of the Group’s reputation or the values that have underpinned it for a century.
Equally important have been the relationships built along the way. No organisation reaches its hundredth year through strategy alone. The commitment of employees, the confidence of customers, the support of international principals and the trust of business partners have all played an essential role in shaping United Group. Many of these relationships have endured for decades, built on mutual respect, consistency and a shared commitment to delivering long-term value.
As we enter our second century, the milestone is not viewed as the conclusion of one chapter, but as the foundation for the next.
The same values that have guided United Group for the past 100 years will continue to shape its future. The focus remains on responsible and sustainable growth, strengthening governance, investing with discipline and pursuing opportunities that align with the Group’s long-term vision. Every decision will continue to be measured not only by its commercial value, but by its contribution to preserving the reputation, integrity and legacy entrusted to each generation.
A century in business is not simply a milestone. It is evidence of sustained purpose, disciplined decision-making and the ability to adapt while staying true to core principles.
The next century will undoubtedly present new opportunities and new challenges. United Group’s ambition is not simply to grow, but to continue building with the same sense of responsibility, stewardship and purpose that has guided the business since 1926, ensuring that the decisions made today strengthen the organisation for generations to come.
